Mondawmin Song & Story Hour
Program Overview
Description: The Song & Story Hour is a free family event, held the fourth Saturday of every month from 2:00-3:00pm on the lower level of Mondawmin Mall. This event is sponsored by Target, Mondawmin Mall, the Greater Mondawmin Coordinating Council, and Coppin State University.
Purpose: This monthly event seeks to increase the quality and quantity of home book reading by modeling the types of beginning literacy concepts, books, activities, and techniques caregivers should utilize with their children to foster a lifelong love of literacy.
Format: The Song & Story Hour is a one hour event in which 5-7 participants read (best-selling, classic, multicultural, award-winning, bilingual, themed, etc.) books share poetry, conduct sing-a-longs, and play games with audience members. Participants receive free books, prizes, and balloons.
Participants: The Song & Story Hour uses volunteer readers, announcers, and participants. To date, the Song & Story Hour has received support from three neighboring community organizations and over 150 volunteers (comprised of teachers, parents, high school/college students, librarians, postal workers and local authors).
