December 17th Story Hour

Join us for the December 17th Song & Story Hour!!

Host Shawna Williams will welcome:

1. Children's author Louise Sutherland as she reads from her new book Moon's Light

3. Coppin Academy teacher Ambika Ramsundar will read a favorite boook and share some special Holiday treats

4. An online story created by CSU's Digital Connector's program

Don't miss out on the fun. The show starts at 4:00PM on the lower level of Mondawmin Mall across of America's Kids.

READER'S CORNER

Are you a new Song & Story Hour Reader? Need to prepare? Follow the steps below:

1. Select a fun, interactive book. Choose a book that is one of your favorites or encourages crowd participation. (If you want to read one of the books listed for the month contact Dr. Jenkins ASAP so that you can be supplied with the book), or visit these are a few helpful websites to find a book you like: http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/search?isParent=Y&isBrowse=Y&N=2078&ESP=PAR/ib//eng/quick_booklists///phlp/txtl/// & http://www.bc.edu/schools/lsoe/title-iii/meta-elements/pdf/bookselectionchecklist.pdf. If you select a book, email me the name and author of the book (at least a week before the Song & Story Hour) so that we can list it in our agenda.

2. Practice reading the book aloud. Visit http://www.readitloud.org/reading_tips.cfm for suggestions.

3. Remember to make your book reading interactive. For example, we have musical instruments so you can instruct the audience to use their sticks just like Max in “Max Found Two Sticks”. You can have volunteers act out scenes from your story as you read books such as “Do Like Kyla”. You can use props to accompany your story (I can prepare them just let me know what you need). For instance, using the book “One” the audience can hold up colors representing the major characters.

4. Practice reading your story. Should you use different voices as you read? Do you need help holding your book? You will only know if you practice. If your book seems too long…you can shorten it by only reading key sentences or phrases. Or you can read a portion of the book and leave the ending as a cliff hanger.

5. The Story Hour has an activity table for families to complete coloring pages, easy arts-n-crafts, and to pick up informational brochures. Do you have a brochure or special activity that you want us to include?

6. The Story Hour uses a large screen to project photos, images, and information. Do you have any special photos that you would like us to include? Special information about your group that you want others to learn about?

7. Watch video clips of past Song & Story Hour readers.

8. Join the "Mondawmin Song & Story Hour" Blog and Facebook page, to view photos/video clips, and chat with Song & Story Hour members.

9. Invite friends and family. It is fun to have your loved ones provide audience participation as you read.
